Handmaid Ofglen (née Lillie Fuller) was one of hundreds of fertile women in the dystopian Republic of Gilead forced to breed with high-ranking government officials to supply the country’s elite with children. Unlike most of her fellow sex slaves, she initially didn’t mind having to endure the monthly “ceremonies” with her master, because, as a former homeless junkie, she was just happy to have a place to sleep and food to eat.

All that changed when she refused to participate in the death-by-stoning of a Handmaid convicted of child endangerment, and convinced her colleagues to do the same. As punishment, Ofglen’s tongue was ripped out and, with it, any last speck of goodwill she felt toward her captors. Secretly linking up with the Mayday resistance movement, she would get her revenge at the grand opening of the Rachel and Leah Center, where, strapped with explosives, she barged into the christening ceremony like a red-cloaked angel of death, blowing herself up along with dozens of Gilead’s top politicians and providing a much-needed jolt of hope to her sisters in bondage.

Coming from a diverse array of backgrounds and lifestyles, the Handmaids were united by the uniquely dire circumstances of their incarceration. Similarly (and much less sinisterly), the Maid, a variation of the Eastside Cocktail developed at Milk & Honey in the mid-2000s, features simple, time-honored ingredients that bring out the best in just about any spirit. For those with tongues still intact, this first-class refreshment is perfect for basking in the brief glory of a woman whose shocking bravery single-handedly delivered one of the only triumphant moments on TV’s bleakest show.
